9th & 10th Grade English Syllabus

 4th Quarter

The following books will be read in class:  In His Steps, The Book of Romans & Worthy is the Lamb.

 

 Reading Reports & Reading Tests (20%)

    The reading reports come from the following books:

Wordly Wise Quizzes and Tests & Grammar Tests (20%)

     Most weeks students will complete a section in their Wordly Wise booklet.  Students will take quizzes

     and tests based upon the chapters they completed. 

 

Writing Assignments  (30%) 

     The students’ writing assignments include, but are not limited to: essays and  the weekly Romans notebook (graded on completion and neatness).  Writing assignments will be based upon content, grammar, neatness, punctuation & style.  Students should check their work carefully prior to submission.

 

Presentation (20%) 

     Students will do a team presentation on poetry (types, examples, famous poets, etc.).  In the presentation, each student must exhibit mastery of one of Shakespeare’s sonnets (see above).  The presentation should also include one poster per student and a power point presentation which involves all the students.  The date for this presentation will be announced.

Participation (10%)

Extra Credit Reading Reports

9th & 10th American History Syllabus

4th Quarter

Tests (40%)

Several tests will be given this quarter.  These tests will cover the material discussed in the chapters of American History: The Easy Way, Third Edition.  The majority of the tests will be taken directly from the Summary section at the end of each chapter.  Unless otherwise indicated, the tests will be held on the following dates: 

                        Test 1:             April 1st           Chapters 8 & 9.

                        Test 2:             April 28th         Chapters 10 & 11.

                        Test 3:             May 12th          Chapters 12 & 13.

                        Test 4:             May 19th          Final exam (details to be announced).

 Presentation (20%)

As a team, the high school students must do a presentation on chapter thirteen.  The presentation will be given on Tuesday, May 5th.  This presentation must be no less than 30 minutes in length, and no more than 45 minutes in length.  Students must describe the Presidents as well as the events which took place in during their presidency.  The three presidents include Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.  The grade will be based upon: 

                        Information:                                                                            30 pts.

                        Poster Board (one per student):                                              20 pts.

                        Power Point (this should be one file, not three):                    20 pts.

                        Memorized portion of a speech                                              10 pts.

                        Technical Aspects to the presentation (how it goes):             10 pts.

                        Time Limit:                                                                             10 pts.

 20th Century War Paper (20%)

Students must submit a report covering either World War I, World War II or the Vietnam War.  This 2-3 page, typed report must cover the causes of the war, the major events and individuals of the war and the results of the war.  The paper must contain 2-3 direct citations.  Citations should appear as follows: 

            Slavery in pre-Civil War was extremely difficult upon those held bondage.  For example, Booker T. Washington wrote, “My life had its beginning in the midst of the most miserable, desolate, and discouraging surroundings” (Booker T. Washigton, Up From Slavery, p.1). 

Students desirous of a good grade on this paper will ensure that their paper contains good grammar and spelling, and that it follows the above example regarding citations.  The paper should begin with a thesis statement, address the three sections described above, and contain a conclusion.  This paper is due on Monday, May 11th. 

 Reading Report (10%)

Students must read a book related to their presentation. 

Participation (10%)

This is determined by a student’s behavior during class lectures, presentations and videos.

Extra Credit

Any student desirous of extra credit should contact Mr. Wehse with their ideas.  Any project must cover one of the individuals discussed in 3rd quarter, and must be submitted by Friday, May 15th.

9th & 10th  Grade Elective:  Religions of the World Syllabus

4th Quarter

This quarter we will complete our study of the book of Romans.  We will also cover issues such as abortion, entertainment, environmentalism and evangelism.

Participation (20%).

The Romans Project Presentation (40%).

Students will prepare a thirty-minute presentation on the book of Romans.  The entire book should be covered.  An outline of the book as well as application should be included in the presentation.  This project will be graded on content (40 pts.), outline (20 pts.), application (20 pts.), creativity (10 pts.) & time (10 pts.).  This presentation will be given on Monday, May 18th. 

Quizzes & Tests (40%).

Several tests will be administered to students during 4th quarter.  The first test will be based upon material covered by John Stonestreet (text, p.195-198), Leyland Ryken (text, p.212) and handouts from Mr. Wehse.  This test is tentatively scheduled for Friday, April 3rd. The one of the final tests of the quarter will cover the discussions and handouts from Romans 9-16 (the tentative date for this test is Thursday, May 14th).  The final test will be a comprehensive test on the book of Romans.  This is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, May 19th.  In addition to the tests, several quizzes will be given to help students prepare for the tests.  Currently, two quizzes covering the material on the Facts Sheets are scheduled for May 5th and May 8th.   Specific information regarding quizzes and tests will be given in advance.

 Extra Credit.

All student desirous of extra credit should contact Mr. Wehse with their ideas. Any project must cover the material discussed in this quarter of Religions of the World.  All extra credit must be completed by Friday, May 15th.

9th grade students:  With the advent of 4th quarter, make sure you know what is due and when it is due. 

9th grade parents:  During Spring Semester, please refer to the 7th grade assignments page for information related to English and History.  Assignments unique to the 9th grade will be communicated via printed material such as the weekly communique.  Thanks.
